The majority stands tall
"The left is blocking the negotiations," said Silvia Sardone, a rising star of Italy's far-right League party. "Their demands are impossible to satisfy." Despite the disagreements, other negotiators agree with this view, as negotiations are ending in a deadlock, not due to opposition from governments or the European Commission, but because the European Union'sown members of parliament are pulling in opposite directions.
Supporters of the technology believe it can help develop crops that resist droughts and reduce the use of chemicals, while critics worry that it will strengthen large seed companies through patents, leading to the displacement of smaller producers. Despite efforts to advance the discussions, negotiations are immediately collapsing, as members of the European Parliament pull the rope in different directions.
Economic dimension
The French socialist Christophe Clergeau, with the support of the Greens and the Left, advocates for stronger protections for small businesses, consumers, and the environment. On the other hand, the Swedish conservative Jessica Polfjärd, who is trying to find common ground to finalize the agreement, is struggling to keep her camp united.
However, two individuals from the group have declared themselves ready to compromise and accept the agreement proposed by the governments, causing a shift in the climate of negotiations. At this stage, the far-right seems to be the only force that can bring about change, with Sardone and Pietro Fiocchi, an Italian politician and heir to a historic arms dynasty, stating they are ready to support the agreement, even though they are not considered proponents of biotechnology.
The threat that the far-right will take action may force Clergeau to accept a compromise he initially refused, in order to avoid reaching an agreement with the support of the far-right without him.
The next rounds of negotiations, scheduled for this week and next, are expected to be decisive for the political agreement that could lead to the completion of the legislation.
