Tulsi Gabbard left with her head held high, the resignation that caused an uproar, and how the enemy of the Clintons could become a third pole in the US
Despite her departure from the administration, very few believe that Tulsi Gabbard will disappear from the political scene. Under her wing, a new political space could begin to take shape beyond the traditional boundaries of Democrats and Republicans.

The departure of the director of the National Intelligence Agency, Tulsi Gabbard, from the administration of Donald Trump is not just another resignation of a high-ranking official. For many in Washington, but also for a significant portion of the American political base that opposes endless military interventions, her departure symbolizes something much deeper: the defeat of the anti-war wing within the American administration and the strengthening of those who promoted military conflict with Iran. Officially, Gabbard announced that she is leaving her post in order to stand by her husband, who is facing a rare form of bone cancer. However, assessments are already multiplying that her departure is not linked exclusively to personal reasons. For many analysts and political observers, Tulsi Gabbard had essentially been isolated for months from the inner decision-making circle of Donald Trump, mainly due to her opposition to military escalation against Iran.

The woman who refused to follow the war line

From the very first moment she took office, Gabbard found herself in a difficult balance. As an Iraq war veteran, she knew better than many the real cost of military interventions. Her political journey had been built on opposition to regime change wars and the belief that American foreign policy must serve national interests and not ideological and economic crusades. She herself had repeatedly warned of the dangers of a new major conflict in the Middle East. She had opposed previous military adventures of the United States and had built her public image as one of the very few political figures who were willing to challenge the Washington establishment. This exactly seems to have been her biggest problem as well.

The conflict with the narrative about the Iranian threat

The relations of Gabbard with the White House began to be severely tested when she refused to fully adopt the rhetoric about an immediate and imminent threat from Iran. During a hearing in Congress in March, when called upon to answer whether Iran constituted an immediate danger to the United States, she avoided confirming the claims promoted by the administration. Even more important was the fact that her agency continued to support a position that had been a steady conclusion of American intelligence services since 2007: that Iran was not actively manufacturing a nuclear weapon. This assessment stood in contrast to the political narrative used to justify the increasing pressure toward Tehran. For many observers, that exact moment marked the beginning of the end of the presence of Gabbard in the administration.

She was no longer in the room

The revelations of former administration official Joe Kent are particularly revealing. According to him, both Gabbard and other officials who reacted to the military conflict with Iran had essentially been excluded from the decision-making process. As he describes, after the start of military operations and operation Midnight Hammer, the circle of people who truly influenced the president was reduced dramatically. The National Security Council lost its traditional role and critical reports proposing alternative solutions or diplomatic avenues never reached the Oval Office. The image that emerges is that of an administration where the voices calling for restraint were brushed aside in favor of those who considered military confrontation inevitable.

From the Democrats to MAGA

The political journey of Tulsi Gabbard has been unique for American standards. She started as a member of the Democrats, but quickly clashed with the party establishment due to her positions on wars, foreign policy, and the role of the United States in the world. Her candidacy for the presidency was met with hostility by a significant part of the Democratic mechanism, reports Responsible Statecraft. Hillary Clinton had gone as far as to hint that Gabbard was serving Russian interests because she challenged the dominant narratives around the conflict in Ukraine and American military interventions. Eventually she found a political home in the MAGA movement, where many believed she could constitute the voice of realism and strategic restraint within a new Trump administration. However, developments showed that her influence was much smaller than it initially appeared.

The prevalence of the hawks

According to the supporters of Gabbard, her departure reflects a deeper shift inside the American administration. The forces that favored a more aggressive policy toward Iran seem to have prevailed fully, limiting the space of action for those who supported diplomacy. She herself did not proceed to a public conflict with the president nor did she adopt aggressive rhetoric against the administration. On the contrary, she chose to depart maintaining her dignity and remaining consistent with the principles she served throughout her public life. For many of her supporters, this stance constitutes an indication of political maturity and personal integrity.

The politics of the next day

Despite her departure from the administration, very few believe that Tulsi Gabbard will disappear from the political scene. On the contrary, several consider that her influence may increase outside government structures. Joe Kent himself argued that many times one can influence developments more effectively outside government than inside a system that has ceased to listen to different views. The question now is whether Gabbard will choose to play a leading role in shaping a new anti-war current in the United States.

A resignation with strong symbolism

Regardless of the real reasons for her departure, the resignation of Tulsi Gabbard has already acquired strong political symbolism. For her supporters, it constitutes the confirmation that she remained faithful to her principles even when faced with powerful pressures. In an era where geopolitical tensions are increasing and voices in favor of military power often dominate public discourse, Gabbard continues to represent a different school of thought: that which considers that diplomacy, realism, and the avoidance of new wars constitute not an indication of weakness, but a prerequisite for long-term security and stability. And perhaps that is why her departure causes much greater concern in Washington than is publicly admitted by those who today celebrate the end of her presence in the White House.

The deep cracks in MAGA

The conflict around the war with Iran revealed deep cracks inside the MAGA movement. A significant portion of the voters who supported Donald Trump did so because they believed in his commitments to end endless wars, limit foreign interventions, and return to a more realistic foreign policy. For many of them, the involvement in a new conflict in the Middle East was considered a betrayal of the initial promises of the movement. Tulsi Gabbard constitutes perhaps the most popular figure linked to this anti-war and anti-interventionist current. Her political journey, which started from the Democrats and ended up in MAGA, allows her to converse simultaneously with disappointed voters from both sides of the American political system.

Tulsi Gabbard as a 3rd pole in the US political system

There are not few who consider that in the coming years she could evolve into a political point of reference for a new movement which will attempt to express those who feel politically homeless between the Democrats and the Republicans. A movement that will combine social pragmatism, opposition to military interventions, skepticism toward the political establishment of Washington, and priority to the internal problems of the United States. Of course, the creation of a real third pole in American politics remains an extremely difficult task. The two-party system possesses deep institutional and financial roots. However, the increasing dissatisfaction toward the two major parties creates conditions that a few years ago would be considered unthinkable. If Tulsi Gabbard chooses to remain active in public discourse and to express that part of MAGA which considers that it was betrayed by the return of Washington to the logic of wars, then it is not excluded that she will evolve into one of the most important political factors of the next decade. Perhaps not as a leader of a new party immediately, but as the personality around whom a new political space could begin to take shape beyond the traditional boundaries of Democrats and Republicans.
