The Ukrainian attack on a ship connected to Iran in the Caspian Sea opens a new and extremely dangerous chapter in the Middle East war.
Tehran speaks of an "aggressive act," accuses Kyiv of attempting to expand the conflict beyond Ukrainian borders, and warns that it will defend its national interests, heightening fears of further regional escalation.
The Ukrainian drone attack on an Iranian commercial vessel, which killed one sailor and injured another, is causing deep concern in Tehran, as fears grow over the expansion of hostilities to new fronts.
For Iran, the security of the Caspian Sea is considered critical for its commercial and energy transport, and any military activity in the region is perceived as a serious threat.
At the same time, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, commenting on Ukrainian attacks against the infrastructure of the Caspian Pipeline Consortium (CPC), spoke of "energy terrorism," reinforcing the Russian condemnation of Ukrainian operations in the region.
Ukraine is now becoming more directly involved in the conflict with Iran, offering to share intelligence with the United States and its allies regarding Russian assistance to Tehran, while simultaneously striking ships that, according to Kyiv, are part of the military supply network connecting Iran with Russia.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated on Saturday that he will instruct Ukrainian intelligence services to forward data to partner countries proving, as he claims, that Russia helped Iran prepare attacks against American military installations and states in the region.
"I will instruct our intelligence services to share with our partners the information we have regarding Russia's new assistance to the Iranian regime," Zelenskyy stated in a post on the X platform.
Iran and Russia are two of the five countries bordering the Caspian Sea, while Moscow maintains a strong naval force there, turning this closed sea basin into a long-range military power projection platform and a vital strategic bridge to Iran.
Iran's angry reaction
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Iran condemned on Saturday night the Ukrainian attack against an Iranian commercial vessel in the Caspian Sea.
According to Iranian authorities, one sailor lost his life in the explosion that occurred on the ship, while another was injured.
Tehran characterized the incident as an "aggressive act," announcing that it will defend its national interests and its security.
At the same time, it accused Ukraine of attempting to broaden the war with Russia.
Strong protest by Tehran
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Iran summoned the chargé d'affaires of Ukraine in Tehran, following the military attack by Ukrainian forces against an Iranian commercial vessel in the Caspian Sea, during which one sailor was killed and several others were injured.
The Ukrainian diplomat was summoned on Sunday morning by the Deputy Foreign Minister and Director General for Eurasia, Manouchehr Moradi, who handed him Tehran's strong protest over the "hostile and criminal act."
"Violation of the UN Charter"
During the meeting, Manouchehr Moradi argued that the attack on the Iranian commercial vessel in the Caspian Sea constitutes a violation of the fundamental principles of the Charter of the United Nations (UN), amounts to an act of aggression, and represents a "clear threat to the security of all coastal states."
At the same time, he emphasized that the Ukrainian government must be held accountable for the incident and punish those responsible for the attack.
"It will not remain unanswered"
Manouchehr Moradi further stressed that the Islamic Republic of Iran will decisively defend its national security and its interests, and that it "will not leave unanswered the attacks against the lives and property of its citizens."
Following these statements, expectations of potential Iranian retaliation are intensifying.
According to what Iranian officials claim, the distance between Tehran and Kyiv is less than 2,000 kilometers, a fact that, as they state, lies within the operational range of Iranian missiles and unmanned aerial vehicles.
Ukrainian strikes on ships connected to Iran
Earlier, the Ukrainian armed forces announced that they struck a Russian warship, as well as other vessels used to transport military cargo connected to Iran in the Caspian Sea.
The attack is considered particularly significant, as the Caspian constitutes a critical transport corridor for military material between Russia and Iran, two countries that have significantly strengthened their strategic and defense cooperation since the beginning of the war in Ukraine. Kyiv has long maintained that Tehran provides military support to Moscow, mainly through unmanned aerial vehicles and related technology.
Russian response with missile attacks on Kyiv
Following the Ukrainian attacks on Saturday, Russia launched missile strikes against Kyiv.
The attacks occurred a few hours after Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced a series of long-range operations against strategic targets on Russian territory.
What Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated
In a post on Saturday, Volodymyr Zelenskyy maintained that Ukraine continues to implement "long-range sanctions" in response to Russian attacks, through targeted military strikes.
As he stated, Ukrainian forces once again struck a factory in the Kirov region, which, according to him, supplies components for weapons used by Russia in its attacks against Ukraine. He added that targets also included an oil refinery in the Tyumen region, a logistics facility in Yekaterinburg, and a fuel depot in Rostov-on-Don.
The Ukrainian president further argued that Ukrainian forces achieved "very strong results" in the Caspian Sea, striking ships used to transport military cargo related to Iran, as well as a Russian warship.
Rapid escalation
Relations between Iran and Ukraine have been on a collision course since 2022, when Tehran supplied Russia with Shahed unmanned aerial vehicles, which Moscow systematically uses in attacks against Ukrainian cities.
Kyiv maintains that since the beginning of the Russian invasion, it has shot down more than 44,000 drones of Iranian design.
At the same time, Ukraine has offered expertise and counter-drone systems to Gulf countries, such as Qatar, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Saudi Arabia, and Kuwait, which have faced attacks attributed to Iran in the past.
CBS report and questioning of Trump's statements
The American network CBS News reported that Zelenskyy plans to deliver to the United States evidence that, according to Kyiv, proves Russia is helping Iran target American military bases in the Middle East.
These claims directly contradict recent statements by President Donald Trump, who had mentioned that he trusts the assurances of Russian President Vladimir Putin that Moscow is not providing military assistance to Tehran.
Risk of regional escalation increases
Analysts estimate that the attack in the Caspian Sea constitutes one of the most serious developments in recent months, as it transfers the conflict to a region of vital importance for Russia and Iran.
The strong reaction from Tehran, combined with new mutual accusations among Kyiv, Moscow, and Iran, increases fears that the war could take on even more unpredictable international dimensions.
