The AK-47, designed by Mikhail Kalashnikov, evolved into one of the most recognizable and widespread small arms globally, leaving a profound mark on the military history of the 20th and 21st centuries.
The initial competitive trials in the USSR began in 1946 and, after successive refinements, Kalashnikov's design was approved for military service in 1949.
The mass production that followed was accompanied by continuous modifications aimed at greater reliability, weight reduction, and lower manufacturing costs.
From the AK-47 to the AKM and the AK-74
In 1959, the modernized AKM appeared, manufactured not only in the Soviet Union but also in numerous other countries.
The AK-74 followed in 1974, marking a new phase in the evolution of the Kalashnikov family.
In the early 1990s, the AK-74M was introduced, which later served as the foundation for the so-called «100-series».

The AK-12 and the fifth generation
The new era for the Kalashnikov family arrived with the AK-12, characterized as the fifth generation of the specific design.
Its development began in 2011 and the first batch was delivered to the Russian Armed Forces in late 2018.
The new model was designed to integrate more easily with modern optics and accessories, while alterations were made to ergonomics, maintenance, and overall functionality.
Following operational experience in subsequent years, new variants and modifications were introduced.
New modifications after 2022
From 2022 onwards, Kalashnikov introduced further modifications to the AK-12, incorporating feedback from combat deployment.
In 2023, a revised version was presented, focusing on simplified handling and increased reliability.
The head of Kalashnikov Concern, Alan Lushnikov, has maintained that the latest revisions feature significant improvements in accuracy and user-friendliness.
For his part, small arms specialist Konstantin Lazarev has pointed out that several of the newer modifications primarily concern ergonomics and easier adaptation of the weapon to modern requirements.
The new compact variants
Of particular interest are the newer compact variants AK-12K and AK-12SK, developed for scenarios requiring a shorter and more maneuverable weapon.
According to Konstantin Lazarev, these specific variants represent one of the most important developments in recent years for the Kalashnikov family.
A design that endures for nearly 80 years
Nearly eight decades after the first trials of the AK-47, the core design philosophy of Mikhail Kalashnikov continues to form the foundation of new models.
From the original AK-47 and the AKM to the AK-74 and today's AK-12, the Kalashnikov family evolves continuously, maintaining its standing as one of the most recognizable names in small arms history.
