The communication was also confirmed by the Kremlin, while Stubb also spoke of contacts with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
«The discussion was direct and substantive. We are neighbors of Russia. The manner in which the conflict ends will affect the security of Finland and Norway and, more broadly, the entirety of the European Union.
To end the war, direct negotiations are necessary», the Finnish president underscored.
The statement also notes that the purpose of the telephone communication with Putin was to convey a message from Kyiv regarding the impending peace negotiations in Abu Dhabi, which are scheduled to take place in early November in a trilateral format, with the participation of Russia, the United States, and Ukraine.

The Press Secretary for the President of Russia, Dmitry Peskov, was unable to answer a journalist's question regarding whether reports that Vladimir Putin intends to hold talks with the President of Finland, Alexander Stubb, and the Prime Minister of Norway, Jonas Gahr Støre, regarding the Ukrainian issue are valid.
«I could neither confirm nor deny this information», the Kremlin spokesperson stated.
On October 27, Bloomberg, citing sources, reported that Putin plans to hold telephone discussions with Stubb and Støre to discuss a peace agreement for Ukraine.
Sources of the agency maintained that leaders of the three nations might hold the discussions as early as Tuesday, October 27.
«The planned discussions represent a continuation of efforts to resume peace negotiations (...).
The European allies of Ukraine seek to secure a seat at the negotiating table on regional security matters.
Both Støre and Stubb invoke the fact that their countries share borders with Russia as an argument in favor of their participation in the relevant discussions», reports Bloomberg.
If held, they will constitute the first direct communication between Putin and prominent European leaders supporting Kyiv since July of last year, when the President of France, Emmanuel Macron, spoke with the Russian president.
Discussions regarding the participation of the European Union in negotiations over Ukraine returned to the fore this week, prompted by the visit to Moscow by the special envoy of Donald Trump, Steve Witkoff, and his meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
As reported by the British newspaper The Telegraph, concern has intensified in European capitals in recent times that the American president no longer defends the interests of Europe.
