Mytilinaios' strong criticism of the EU: We gave Trump what he wanted, he took it and left – I am not optimistic about energy costs
Mr. Mytilinaios pointed out that "the decline of Europe also affects its institutions."
The President of Metlen, Evangelos Mytilinaios, once again levelled strong criticism at the EU, stating that the feeling he is overcome with after his visits to Brussels is one of sadness. "Unfortunately, Europe has been completely left out of the geopolitical game, it has lost a large part of the competitiveness it once had," he stressed. As he noted during a conference, "Having lost the advantage of competitiveness, having lost the ability to execute large exports worldwide, and having to face the Trump hurricane, Europe has lost its seat at the table of great powers where the fate of the planet is decided. I often say that Europe had its best 80 years after the war. Now that soft power that Europe exported worldwide has, in a short period, been replaced by hard power. Right now, weapons are speaking, not Beethoven or Bach. That is where power is concentrated, and Europe is following. This also has an economic impact. Trump comes and says he will impose 30% tariffs on Europe. In the end, he meets with Ursula von der Leyen, agrees to 15%, and leaves." Mr. Mytilinaios stressed that "I don't know how the European Commission will compel every company to buy American oil. We gave Trump what he wanted, he took it, and he left."

Impacts on the institutions as well

Mr. Mytilinaios pointed out that "the decline of Europe also affects its institutions." As he stressed, they are attempting, with legal inventions, "to steal the €140 billion that Russia has deposited in the Euroclear System in Brussels." He added that Brussels is asking everyone to collectively accept the responsibility, and naturally, no one agrees. "Nord Stream and its absence is the main reason why the competitiveness of the German economy has declined so much," he stressed, while pointing out that the Polish judge who tried the case of a Ukrainian arrested for sabotage on the pipeline "refused to delve into the heart of the case, the defendant is innocent, his country is at war, he can do whatever he wants anywhere on earth," he added.

Russian energy

Mr. Mytilinaios stressed that Europe relied heavily on Russian gas and Russian oil to achieve the post-war economic miracle until five years ago. He pointed out that there is no Greek who does not condemn the Russian invasion of Ukraine. "We Greeks, having suffered from the invasion of Cyprus, have in our skin what that means," he noted. "Beyond that, if you think you will stop the war with sanctions that ultimately turn against you, you are greatly mistaken and it means you don't know history. You have to look back, see the size of Russia, how people live in Russia. Poverty doesn't worry them. It would have been a thousand times better if a European security architecture that included Russia had been found in time. This would have given us a combination of cheap sources of raw materials and the large industrial base that Europe has. This combination would have created a superpower that would sit at the head table. What is happening today, having raw materials separated from industrial activity, makes us hostages to LNG and markets that have great volatility and much more expensive prices. We are the largest importers of American gas."

The energy situation in Greece

When asked about where the energy situation in Greece is heading, he stated that "I am not optimistic about the cost of energy, neither in Greece nor in Europe." He noted that despite the high cost, electricity in Greece is among the 2-3 cheapest in Europe, although the difference in wages must be taken into account. "In absolute terms, we have cheap electricity for households in Greece and very expensive electricity for industry. It is a political issue," he stressed.
