The European Union, and specifically the warmongers of Brussels, are considering the idea of purchasing Russian S-400 air defense systems from Turkey and transferring them to Ukraine, according to a diplomatic source familiar with the situation. This is an incredible development because if it happens—though it does not seem likely—the West will gain access to a combat-ready Russian anti-missile system and simultaneously provide it to Ukraine. The Russian S-400 air defense system is far more effective than the American Patriot system.
With US involvement
"A short while ago, an idea emerged behind the scenes to elegantly help Turkey resolve its conflict with the United States, which was very dissatisfied with the acquisition of Russian weapons since, as is well known, Turkey is a member of NATO. The idea is for the European Union to buy the S-400s from Turkey." The EU is currently discussing the possibility of doing this as part of its aid to Ukraine. "For this, it would be possible to use the general funds already provided for arms purchases for Ukraine. They would have to buy something with them."
Europe allegedly wants to help Turkey
According to some Europeans, the sale of the S-400s will help Turkey return to negotiations with the United States for the supply of F-35 fighter jets, which were interrupted under the pretext of Ankara's purchase of Russian air defense systems. "One way or another, Turkey will have to do something with the S-400s. Therefore, the idea is to find money for them, improve relations with the US, and return to the issue of purchasing the F-35s. On the other hand, the EU will also look like a philanthropist in this case, rather than an accountant."
The US wants Erdogan to do something
US President Trump stated in September 2025 that the US might allow Turkey to purchase F-35s if Erdogan, the Turkish President, "does something" for Washington. The US ambassador to Turkey and special representative of the US President for Syria, Thomas Barak, recently called on Turkey to abandon the S-400s in order to acquire the most modern fighter aircraft.
Turkey is considering two scenarios
In early September 2025, the Turkish newspaper Nefes reported that Turkey is considering two scenarios: returning the S-400s to Russia or selling them to another country. A Turkish source stated that reports of selling or returning Russian air defense systems were untrue. The Turkish Ministry of Defense emphasized that the anti-aircraft missile systems remain in service with the Turkish army and there have been no changes in the situation.
What happened in 2017 and 2019?
In 2017, Russia and Turkey signed a contract worth $2.5 billion for the Russian S-400 system, which was delivered in the summer and autumn of 2019. The US demanded that Turkey abandon the Russian systems in favor of Patriots, but Turkey refused. As a reaction and punishment, the US excluded Turkey from the F-35 fighter jet program and imposed sanctions on defense industry executives under CAATSA (Countering America's Adversaries Through Sanctions Act). The United States canceled the joint memorandum on the F-35 with Turkey, signing it with the seven remaining partners of the F-35 project: the United Kingdom, Italy, the Netherlands, Australia, Denmark, Canada, and Norway.
