Erdogan provides 'life jacket' to Mitsotakis and ND with a hot summer in the Aegean Sea – Trump in Athens on July 5-6
Ankara aims to introduce legislation to counterbalance the Greek government's bill on marine parks, which it considers to have been enacted without taking into account Turkey's views regarding its jurisdiction in the Aegean.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is emitting distress signals following the drafting of a legal text by Turkey, which will codify into state law its long-standing contestations over the Aegean Sea, maritime zones, and sovereign rights in the Aegean, thereby circumscribing Greek sovereignty. The piece of legislation will be brought before the Turkish Grand National Assembly for a vote towards the end of June, and the moment it is passed, it will constitute state law. This development is capable of not only creating faits accomplis in the sensitive region of the Aegean but also bringing about a hot summer for both countries.

Response to the law on marine parks

Ankara aims to introduce legislation to counterbalance the Greek government's bill on marine parks, which it considers to have been enacted without taking into account Turkey's views regarding its jurisdiction in the Aegean. The Turkish draft law will essentially grant the Turkish government the right to take initiatives in areas that have hitherto been classified as "grey zones," enabling it to launch projects for marine parks and ecological activities. In effect, it will legally establish for Turkey everything that the "Blue Homeland" doctrine claims within the Aegean.

SOS to Maximos Mansion from Gerapetritis

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has warned the Maximos Mansion that signals from Turkey have been highly unusual of late. The geopolitical framework is structured as follows: if Trump reaches an understanding with Iran, the next primary flashpoint will be the Aegean, driven by Ankara's long-standing claims. Furthermore, it is by no means coincidental that the Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the US State Department, in coordination with their respective embassies, are working to finalize a date for US President Trump to visit Athens before proceeding to Ankara.

Trump's arrival is anything but accidental

The timeframe currently under consideration is July 5-6. The timing chosen by Ankara to escalate tension is far from accidental. The US, and specifically Trump, will need to assume the role of overseers in the region. It is worth recalling that the Turks had raised their rhetoric significantly during the US-Israeli military operations against Iran, a period when Patriot missiles were deployed to Karpathos. Moreover, a few days ago, news emerged—which did not pass unnoticed—that a Turkish vessel harassed the Ocean Link, a ship engaged in cable-laying operations between Astypalea and Kos. While the issue is exceptionally grave, in strictly political terms, it could potentially serve the interests of the Mitsotakis government. In the sense that within a domestic political climate dominated by inflation, scandals, and fierce opposition, appealing to a national security issue boosts the administration's standing. A similar phenomenon occurred in 2021 with the Evros border fence, which drove the government's popularity to its absolute peak. For the ruling party, which currently hovers around 25%-26% in opinion polls, the prospect of a "hot summer 2026" might ultimately serve as a convenient distraction.
