German Chancellor Friedrich Merz downplayed reports suggesting a conflict between Europe and U.S. President Donald Trump, stating that he had a “constructive conversation” with him.
Asked about Trump’s comments regarding his recent talks with Europeans, Merz minimized tensions between the two sides.
He said they had “a very detailed discussion,” in which they discussed certain proposals, emphasizing “what territorial concessions Ukraine is willing to make.”
However, Merz stressed that “this is a matter that… the Ukrainian president and the Ukrainian people must answer.”
He said that if discussions progress as expected, further talks with U.S. officials would follow over the weekend, and there may be “a meeting in Berlin early next week,” potentially involving Americans.
However, he noted that generally Trump gave the impression that “he is ready to follow this path with us” and that the U.S. president “understands that Europeans must also be heard.”
Referring to their phone conversation, he said that both sides showed “mutual respect.”
