Cyrus Schayegh, professor of international history and politics at the Graduate Institute of Geneva, states that, in comparison with other US wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, the war with Iran is «more significant», as it has altered the balance of power.
«This is the core problem we face at the moment, in different phases.
There was a war, then military clashes, now there are economic sanctions, and then diplomatic efforts», Schayegh stated to Al Jazeera.
«However, across all these phases, the fundamental issue is that Iran wants to preserve the shifting balance of power, which is now somewhat more favorable to it compared to before», he added.
Schayegh explained that the US wants the situation to return to what applied previously.
«What is happening in the Gulf and between the US and Iran is of decisive importance for the Gulf and the wider region, but it is also critical for the image and the form that American power takes across the entire world», he stated.
