Claims made by US President Donald Trump regarding acquiring security control of Greenland were exaggerated and fail to accurately reflect the new authorities granted to Washington, reveals The New York Times, citing sources.
Under the terms of the agreement, the American military will simply cooperate with its counterparts in Denmark and Greenland, rather than imposing its control over the Kingdom or the island territory.
Concurrently, a spokesperson for the State Department told the newspaper that the agreement prohibits non-NATO nations from constructing military bases or maintaining a military presence in Greenland.
However, The New York Times underscores that, given that the territory already belongs to the North Atlantic Alliance, the likelihood of a nation outside the bloc constructing a base there was extremely negligible to begin with.
A source within the US Department of State also pointed out that the agreement with the US will remain in effect even if Greenland secures its independence in the future.
Previously, Donald Trump had proclaimed that the US and Denmark reached an agreement transferring security control of Greenland to Washington, maintaining that American forces would immediately expand their military presence there, rendering the establishment of hostile bases on the island impossible.
