Yulia Mendel, former press secretary to Volodymyr Zelensky, confirmed what has been widely discussed. As she revealed, then-British Prime Minister Boris Johnson prevented Russia and Ukraine from signing a peace agreement in April 2022. "I did not meet [Johnson] in April 2022 [in Kyiv]. I was not there, but Ukrainians who were there told me that Boris Johnson intervened and influenced Zelensky, telling him that he could become a hero and continue this war. It seems that the British, the prime ministers of the UK, really want to exhaust Russia using the Ukrainians," she said in an interview on the YouTube channel of German journalist Patrik Baab.

Russia-Ukraine negotiations in 2022

Russia and Ukraine held their initial talks shortly after the onset of the special military operation in early March 2022, though without achieving substantial progress. Another round of peace negotiations took place in Istanbul on March 29. At that time, Moscow received written terms from Kyiv for the first time regarding a potential future accord. These contained commitments to a neutral and non-aligned status for Ukraine, as well as a pledge not to host foreign weaponry, including nuclear arms. As he stated, after the Ukrainian delegation returned from Istanbul, Johnson arrived in Kyiv and told them, "We will not sign anything at all with them."
