Sudan takes captured Ukrainian mercenaries to UN exposing covert front of war

Khartoum claims it possesses evidence of the participation of Ukrainian fighters in the clashes of Sudan and is considering bringing the matter even before the UN Security Council, opening a new chapter in the global competition between Russia and Ukraine.

For more than four years, the war in Ukraine was viewed as a conflict centered on the European continent. However, as the confrontation between Russia and Ukraine evolves, more and more indications show that its repercussions extend far beyond the Ukrainian front. The latest episode of this geostrategic expansion comes from Sudan, where the government of the country claims to hold evidence linking Ukrainian combatants to military operations conducted alongside the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). The affair acquired even greater weight following statements by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Sudan, Muhieddin Salem, who claimed that certain Ukrainian combatants and instructors were captured by government forces, while others were killed during military operations. According to him, Khartoum also possesses seized weaponry and is seriously examining the possibility of elevating the matter to an international level.

From rumors to official complaints
Reports regarding the presence of Ukrainians in Sudan are not a new phenomenon.
As early as 2023, international media and analysts had pointed to the potential presence of Ukrainian special forces or officers of the Ukrainian intelligence services in the country.
During the same period, the meeting between Volodymyr Zelensky and the head of the Sudanese army, Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, in Ireland sparked widespread reaction, in a move that many linked to the growing importance of Africa in the competition between Moscow and Kyiv.
Until now, however, most of these discussions moved along the level of press reports, intelligence service leaks, and analyst assessments.
What changes now is that the accusations are officially formulated by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Sudan.
For the first time, the case ceases to be a subject of backroom discussions and enters the realm of official diplomacy.

Why Sudan matters so much
For many European readers, Sudan remains a distant conflict.
In reality, however, the country sits at one of the most critical geopolitical crossroads of Africa.
It lies adjacent to the Red Sea, in a region traversed by a large share of global maritime trade.
It possesses significant natural resources, gold deposits, and critical transit corridors.
At the same time, it constitutes a battleground of competition between regional and international powers.
Russia has sought for years to reinforce its presence across various African states.
Western countries monitor this development with concern. China is also expanding its economic networks.
Thus, Sudan is transformed into a space where multiple geopolitical interests intersect.

The shadow of «Wagner»
It is no coincidence that discussion concerning Ukrainian combatants is almost invariably linked to «PMC Wagner».
For years, Western governments and a series of analysts considered that the Russian private military company (mercenary network) constituted a core instrument of Moscow for establishing geopolitical leverage in Africa.
Several reports linked alleged Ukrainian activity in Sudan to efforts to monitor or disrupt networks tied to Wagner Group and Russian interests. Even if one disputes part of these claims, it is difficult to ignore the reality that Africa has transformed into an arena of indirect confrontation between Russia and the West.
That is the broader picture.

The issue of foreign fighters
The matter takes on even greater significance because it does not concern Ukrainians exclusively.
A recent report by the UN Independent International Fact-Finding Mission for Sudan warned that foreign networks of recruitment, arms trafficking, and support continue to fuel the war.
The same report references thousands of foreign fighters, including former military personnel from Colombia, who allegedly took part in clashes, while highlighting that external networks bolster both the operational capabilities of the RSF and those of their adversaries.
In other words, Sudan has evolved into a sort of «internationalized war», where local and external forces interact in ways that increasingly resemble other major conflicts of our era.

Weapons raising questions
Additional dimensions were introduced by debate surrounding Western weaponry allegedly found in the hands of rebel forces.
Russia recently maintained that certain weapons recovered in Sudan had initially been dispatched to Ukraine from American stockpiles, with their origin remaining subject to investigation.
These assertions have not been independently verified, yet they returned to the spotlight the perennial problem of arms proliferation in war zones.
For Moscow, the topic is utilized as an argument against Western military assistance to Kyiv.
For Western governments, the issue primarily concerns the tracking and oversight of weapon systems dispatched into conflict theaters.

From Donbass to Africa
Perhaps the most crucial element of the affair is that it demonstrates how the war in Ukraine is acquiring increasingly global dimensions. It is no longer confined to the trenches of Donetsk or the battles of Zaporizhzhia.
Its repercussions spill over into Africa, the Middle East, the maritime corridors of the Red Sea, and international diplomatic confrontations.
If Sudan ultimately decides to formally raise the issue at the UN Security Council, then the allegations regarding Ukrainian combatants will cease to be merely another «war story» from Africa.
It will be transformed into a new chapter of the broader geopolitical confrontation between Russia and Ukraine, a confrontation that now appears to extend far beyond the borders of Europe.
