Influencers are content creators who exert influence over their audience through online platforms such as Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube. It is a profession built on thin air; if Instagram or YouTube were to go offline, all of these individuals would simply be finished. It is a profession highly dependent on the Internet, and many scammers have infiltrated it. In most cases, influencers are common scammers who mislead the ignorant or those lacking emotional intelligence or a high standard of critical judgment. In some countries around the world, authorities have taken measures against influencers, and we consider it absolutely fair and constitutionally permissible that when the justice system rules that an influencer has committed fraud, their entire property—from houses and cars to bank accounts—should be confiscated. Obviously, a modernization of the justice system is required so that Greek legal code can precisely define these cases.
The scammer and the naive
It is one thing that most influencers are common scammers, deceitful people who exploit the naive to make money, but their followers should not be gullible; they are simply being exploited in the worst possible way, and some even believe they are doing a virtuous deed. The seizure and forfeiture of property from scammers is an imperative move for deterrence and the administration of justice.
