A major debate has opened within New Democracy regarding the State ballot and primarily its electable positions, as current polling data create different numerical balances compared to 2023.
With a percentage around 30%, ND could, depending also on the final seat allocation and the number of parties entering Parliament, elect approximately three to four State deputies, compared to seven elected in 2023.
This fact makes the discussion about the figures who will occupy top spots even more interesting. Several names are already circulating in the political sphere. Behind the scenes, however, a real battle is underway for the State ballot among officials.
The seven in the frame
Nikitas Kaklamanis: In a distinct category, as he reportedly does not desire a new candidacy in Athens A and discussions with the Prime Minister regarding the State ballot remain open. He has changed, turning from a critic into a supporter of Mitsotakis.
Stavros Papastavrou: The name of the Minister of Environment and Energy has been discussed for the State ballot, particularly following scenarios suggesting his candidacy in the South Sector would not proceed. He has contributed to the government, yet does not add anything substantial to ND.
Margaritis Schinas: Strongly returning to the debate. His name has been mentioned over recent weeks as one of the potential choices. He is also rumored for government spokesperson, as the State ballot would afford him endless media appearances.
Fragkoulis Fragkos: The former Chief of the Hellenic Army General Staff was also on the list of names under discussion, with reports of recommendations from Thessaloniki reaching Kyriakos Mitsotakis. However, he appears unwilling to involve himself with ND.
Konstantinos Floros: The former Chief of the Hellenic National Defence General Staff has also been cited as a potential choice, without any indication that a definitive agreement exists.
Afroditi Nestora: Her name has surfaced due to the tragic death of her mother in a terrorist attack. ND aims in this way to symbolize the fight against violence and terrorism.
Roussopoulos, Bakoyannis in the frame
Theodoros Roussopoulos is also among the scenarios; according to circulating reports, he does not intend to seek the preference vote again, making the State ballot one of the considered options.
Of particular interest is the case of Dora Bakoyannis. Her recent public statements have reignited scenarios suggesting she is considering leaving the Chania ballot to move into an electable spot on the State ballot.
