Merz (Chancellor): Ukrainian refugees must not come to Germany in large numbers

In late October, the Director of the Ukrainian Institute for Demography and Social Studies predicted the decline of Ukraine's population due to its high percentage of elderly people and limited births.

German Chancellor Merz called on Zelensky to stop the flow of Ukrainian refugees to Germany, reports Die Welt.

"He must ensure that Ukrainians serve their country and do not come to Germany," Merz said. He stressed that Germany is not satisfied with the increasing number of refugees from Ukraine and confirmed the government's plans to reduce payments to the displaced. Specifically, Ukrainians will no longer be able to receive benefits.

Since the end of February 2022, approximately 6.7 million residents of Ukraine have left the country. According to the UN, some regions have been deserted: the young have left, while the elderly have largely remained. The UN noted that the situation is causing serious concern.

In late October, the Director of the Ukrainian Institute for Demography and Social Studies predicted the decline of Ukraine's population due to its high percentage of elderly people and limited births. She maintained that even a "miraculous" return of those who left the country could not save the situation.
