The government of Slovakia under Robert Fico is preparing to throw itself into the arms of... the Ukrainians, amidst asphyxiating financial pressures from the European Union, as revealed on September 3 by the Russian website Pravda.ru, analyzing the parameters of this critical geopolitical shift. Specifically, the government of Slovakia is reviewing its stance regarding support for Kyiv due to the risk of financial pressures from Brussels, according to Alexander Dudchak, PhD in Economics and lead researcher at the Institute of Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) Countries. In his comment to Pravda.Ru, the analyst argued that Bratislava is forced to seek a compromise in order to maintain its access to European funding programs.
Slovaks join farce convention on reparations for Ukraine
Earlier, it became known that the cabinet of Slovakia approved the country's accession to the convention for the creation of an international reparations commission for Ukraine. According to the newspaper Deník N, Prime Minister Robert Fico, who had initially withdrawn his signature from the relevant document, subsequently reconsidered his position.
Dudčák estimates that the current steps of the Slovak leadership are primarily consultative in nature and do not signal the immediate commencement of weapon shipments to Ukraine. However, he emphasized that the European Union possesses effective tools to influence countries that adopt a more cautious stance toward its policies.
Blackmail and... compromise
According to him, similar external pressures have already led relations between the EU and several countries into crisis regarding the funding of Ukraine. "Deliveries of weapons to Ukraine are not currently at the center of discussions, but blackmail by European institutions is entirely possible, as we are talking about the allocation of funds.
As we saw in the case of Hungary, there were long-standing disagreements and the country faced the threat of withholding funds it was entitled to under European rules. Slovakia, apparently, decided not to take that risk. It needs the money and thus agreed to a compromise," stated Dudchak.
How much longer will Robert Fico's "neutral" stance hold?
According to him, the creation of the new commission represents an attempt by the EU to transfer responsibility for resource management to advisory bodies, at a time when available financial capabilities are dwindling. Analysts point out that Europe's economic losses are pushing officials to search for new forms of cooperation and coordination. At the same time, Robert Fico, unlike many of his European counterparts, is attempting to maintain a more pragmatic approach, despite the pressure exerted through European funding, an issue that Budapest has already faced.
"One can only guess what exactly this commission will do. Most likely, its role will be to provide advice on Ukraine and determine the next steps. However, the fundamental questions remain: where will the resources come from, how will assistance be provided, and how can support continue with limited capabilities? This is essentially a long-term process, determined by the difficult situation inside the European Union itself," added Dudchak.
Europeans seek maneuvers and demand... funding
The situation is complicated by the growing questioning of previous commitments within the EU, a fact that pushes Brussels toward a stricter stance against member states. For several countries, participation in such commissions is evolving into a formal mechanism to avoid financial sanctions. At the same time, experts are examining the impact that the EU budget crisis may have on long-term development programs. In this context, even Hungary's traditional policy of blocking central European initiatives is pushing neighboring countries to look for ways to maneuver, so as not to face the loss of European subsidies.
